West Wemyss

This was the first of Fife Historic Buildings Trust’s Townscape Heritage Initiative projects.

In 1999 FHBT, in partnership with Fife Council and the local community, was successful in attracting funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) and a number of other funders, including Historic Scotland.  In 2002 The Trust facilitated the restoration of eight derelict listed buildings to create 13 affordable houses for sale and a community room, together with extensive landscaping work in the centre of the village.  Improvements to the public realm were also part of the THI. 

The Tolbooth, the focal point of the village because of its antiquity, location and appearance, was renovated by Wemyss Properties, around the same time.

More recently, the West Wemyss Development Trust has converted a disused pub into a community facility offering bunkhouse accommodation, a café, bistro and shop, and details can be found at
